Overcoming Off-seasonal Depression

Well, the Buffalo Bills have been eliminated from the NFL playoffs in yet another disappointing fashion. The time of year we all dread is upon us once again.

If you’re like us at The Wride Write Journal and simply cannot get enough of the Bills, we have some suggestions to help you get through the offseason and into the 2024 training camp.

Watch the rest of the playoffs:

Although the Bills have been eliminated and it can be hard to want to watch the rest of these teams compete, there are only three NFL games left this season. We should cherish the time we have left with the NFL this year because we’ll be missing it in no time.

There are two very intriguing matchups within the four teams still standing this week:

Kansas City Chiefs @ Baltimore Ravens- 3:00 EST

The Kansas City Chiefs got the best of the Bills last week, but there was arguably only one hotter team heading into the postseason. The Ravens will be hosting their first  AFC championship game in the Lamar Jackson era after missing the playoffs the past couple years. Ladies and Gentlemen, this Ravens team is NOT the same team the Bills sent home in 2021. They are expecting star TE, Mark Andrews to make his return in this game. the offense has already been on a heater with Todd Monken’s scheme and the injection of the rookie WR sensation Zay Flowers. Between both teams’ offenses and defenses, all four units have been dominant in their own right. We all know what Chiefs are capable of in the playoffs as the AFC Championship has become the floor for the franchise, but the Ravens have been a buzzsaw on both sides of the ball the entire season. This game has all the makings to be an all-time classic.

Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers - 6:30pm EST

this game may seem to be a story of David and Goliath, but the Detroit Lions believe THEY are Goliath. The franchise turnaround led by Dan Campbell has been one of the best stories in the league the past few years. After just narrowly missing the playoffs last year, the Detroit Lions finally won their first playoff game since 1991 and found a way to win last weekend to give themselves a shot at a Super Bowl appearance. The issue is that the tip of the NFC mountain is as sharp as a spear because the San Francisco 49ers have corrected their course after a rough go down the stretch of the season. The key advantage the 49ers have is the Lions secondary has been inconsistent this year. The lions would love for this game to become a shootout. It seems that they’ll have to score early and often to stay in this one. No matter who wins this matchup, the NFL will have storylines on storylines. Will  Brock Purdy make it to a Super Bowl in just his second year after building a case for MVP? Will the Lions get their first chance to compete for a Lombardi?

Take a Break:

If you try stay up to date with the team year round like we do, It can be healthy to take some time off from being glued to the game once the season has concluded. As long as you don’t work in the media, you really  don’t need to be the first one to see that ESPN notification. It can also be exciting for other people in your life to finally give you some Bills news you haven’t already heard.

On top of that, the mock drafts we see now will all be changing so much from now until April. They won’t hold much weight as boards change since prospects will be testing at the Senior Bowl and during their Pro Days. We never really know what an organization has in mind anyways, so even most final mocks are wildly inaccurate after the first few picks.

Many of us could all benefit from spending some more time with friends and family, or working on those new years resolutions we all said we would stick with. It’s certainly okay to take a break and all the Bills talk will still be here when you get back. It will especially be easy to catch up around the league if you decide to turn off those football notifications. It’s usually a pretty slow time of year.

Go back and watch highlights:

One of the best ways to satisfy that offseason itch is to go back and watch highlights. There’s a never-ending list of highlight videos for the NFL’s great games and players. Although it won’t be live, it’s still a great way to remind ourselves of moments we had watching football and refresh our memory of certain impactful plays. From Thurman Thomas to James Cook, there are so many different times to re-live.

It doesn’t have to be Bills players either! I personally go back to rewatch my favorite three players growing up on a regular basis. Between Megatron, The Sheriff and BeastMode, I can keep myself entertained by football for hours during the off-season.

Get to know our new players:

We’ve all been embarrassed in front of other people talking about sports at some point after not having some common knowledge about a team or player. You don’t want to be the person who has no idea who the new star on the team is.

After the Bills bring in new free agents and select their rookies in the draft, we should try to get to know them as fans. We can go back and watch highlights from previous games, read their bios and find film breakdowns on nearly every player in the league.

This goes for other teams as well! Having knowledge about other teams around the league will make it easier to stay up to date when things get rolling again in training camp. It will also help you to nail your upcoming fantasy football drafts and bet on the NFL more wisely in the future!

Stick With Us:

The Wide Write Journal is going to be covering all things Bills to get everyone through the dark times of the offseason. We have a huge amount of content coming and we are very excited to see where this team is headed. Being a part of Bills Mafia is something truly special because we’ve learned to lean on and support each other as much as any other fanbase in sports. We are happy to be here for you to lean on and thank you for your support as well.

As Always, Go Bills!
